EnJee left Festac Town the same way he arrived, on the back of an okada, shifting through the busy streets. As his driver pushed further away from town, the streets widened, the texture of the road shifting from nanocrete to asphalt and finally to dirt. They wound up on the edge of town on an airstrip bustling with activity.

The security here was cursory, young people in ripped jeans and T-shirts carrying whatever weapons they could afford. What kept the airstrip safe was the need for it to exist. A dozen VSTOLs in various states of disrepair waited in hangars that bore a close resemblance to the shanties of Festac Town. He found Grim Fox in one of them, helping to load small cases into the storage locker of a VSTOL. It was no Banshee. On this trip, his money only bought them passage on a dented Ares Venture whose markings suggested it’d once been a military light transport.

Grim Fox closed up the last of the storage bins, and with that done, the aircraft looked ready to take off. EnJee nodded to the pilot, a dark-skinned dwarf with a spiky afro, dressed in a too-large flight suit with rolled-up sleeves and pant legs.

Shen was behind the aircraft, pacing angrily. Grim Fox jogged over to meet EnJee. He said, “Enzo’s in the plane. We’re good to takeoff as soon as the three of us get on board.”

“What’s her deal?” asked EnJee.

“Our boy Nero found himself in the middle of a failed extraction.”

“Bollocks. He okay?”

“Yeah, he handled himself. He doesn’t think he blew his cover. Enzo’s boss was the target and caught a few rounds.”

“Sloppy.”

“Don’t I know it,” agreed Grim Fox. “Think this is going to affect the deal?”

EnJee said, “Hard to say. Not likely a company that big lets a little extraction get in the way of doing business.”

Grim Fox looked over his shoulder and said, “Shen told me about your guy from Lombadier & Zienz. Still chasing the bigger plot, neh?”

EnJee said, “I told you, the more we know about what’s really going on, the better our chances of still standing when it is all over.”

Grim Fox sighed and said, “Might as well hear it, then. What’d you find out about this Zeik Weisz deal?”

“As it turns out, Zeik Weisz is actually a shell company.”

Grim Fox looked surprised. “Why would Novak go through all that trouble to buy up a shell company?”

“Yes, well that’s the thing about shells. Sometimes they hide pearls.”
